Just after 4.10am, Fire and Rescue NSW Taree 453 was called out to the Komune coffee shop to reports of smoke coming out of the building.
The Taree Pumper and Hazmat were used and with assistance from Fire and Rescue NSW Wingham 502, firefighters forced entry into the building.
The crew had difficultly accessing the fire initially due to its location in the building.
It is believed the fire started in a store room.
The crews worked for two hours to contain the fire and check all ceiling spaces.
Firefighters were decontaminated after the operation as a precaution to any possible interaction with asbestos.
Taree Fire Station Commander Peter Willard said the Taree and Wingham crews worked well to contain the fire to the shop.
“They were excellent in stopping it from spreading,” Commander Willard said.
Neighbouring businesses The Barbers Chair and Local Appliance Rentals were closed on Friday due to smoke damage and to allow Manning Great Lakes police to investigate the fire.
