New Year's Day was the date for episode two of what NASA has dubbed the "supermoon trilogy": three supermoons in swift succession.
Four weeks ago on December 3, the "cold moon" supermoon rose in the evening and the first day of 2018 brought what’s known as the the ‘wolf moon’ supermoon.

While the New Year's Day super moon will be the closest of the three, and therefore the brightest, cloudy night skies obscured it for many star gazers.
Judy Butler from Tuncurry has been on the lookout and captured the images in teh gallery above on Tuesday evening (January 2).
But it's the "blue moon blood moon supermoon" rising on the night of January 31, 2018, that has night sky enthusiasts really excited.
