Funds for a water safety project has been on Jane’s radar for a number of years now due to need and demand in the community.
With the Mid North Coast area including so many rivers, pools and beaches, it is vita that our multicultural residents learn the skills and knowledge needed to stay safe and enjoy our waterways confidently, she said.
“This summer has seen a number of tragic drownings and near drownings across Australia and locally,” Jane said.
“The program is free and includes survival lessons in a pool environment and ocean awareness and surf safety lessons at local beaches.
“The program will give participants skills for life they can share with their families and friends.
“It will include key areas such as floating, swimming, supervision of children, identifying when someone is drowning and what to do, and spotting rips and the importance of swimming between the flags,” she said.
The program is available in Port Macquarie, Taree and Forster to adults who are born overseas and cannot swim or cannot swim confidently.
The program will run over the first school term with one session per week.
