Early summer is the time when mosquito numbers are on the rise.
North Coast Public Health Unit director Paul Corben encourages people to take simple steps to avoid mosquito bites.
They include wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes with long sleeves, using insect repellent and making sure your fly screens are in good condition.
Mosquitoes can carry Ross River Virus and Barmah Forest Virus.
“This year, we’ve had over 300 cases in total,” Mr Corben said.
About two thirds of those have been cases of Ross River Virus with Barmah Forest Virus making up the remainder.
“They are quite debilitating infections,” he said.
“People get very achy joints and can get a fever and sometimes a rash.”
Ross River virus infections are the most common mosquito-borne infection in Australia.
