The after-effects of the abuse – and no doubt, the impact of the inquiry – will remain forever.
However, a different legacy of both the abuse and the inquiry has been revealed.
The people who told their story to the Royal Commission were given an opportunity to share a message with the Australian community.
More than 1000 contributions were received and serve as a tribute to survivors’ courage in coming forward to tell their stories.
Survivors wrote of their experiences and their hopes for creating a safer future for children.
These messages were published in a commemorative book that was handed over to the National Library of Australia during the final sitting of the Royal Commission on December 14, 2017.
They can be read online also.
