Sally Codyre was a little daunted interviewing one of her favourite musicians Alex the Astronaut but was pleased with the end result.
What is it about this story that sticks in your mind:
How down to earth and positive she was. It was a great learning experience for me, and made me more confident in my new role.
What were the challenges in writing this story:
This story presented a number of challenges for me. Most significantly, the subject of the interview was a musician who I was a fan of, and that made the interview both very exciting and daunting.
This was a significant milestone for me as a new journalist and I had to make sure I didn’t let my nerves get the better of me. This story was significant for me because it boosted my confidence in conducting future interviews.
What kind of stories do you love to write:
I really enjoy stories that convey a previously unknown side to people, events or situations. Stories that are heartwarming, yet still have an element of challenge in them. I enjoy finding newsworthy aspects of the lives of people who otherwise might not have been in the news, telling the stories of the community.
This story isn't exactly in that description, but it was both challenging and rewarding, and was a fantastic learning opportunity for me.
Anything else you would like to say about this story:
As a new journalist, there is a steep learning curve, and a number of challenges, which everyone interprets and handles differently.
For me, conducting interviews was one of the more daunting aspects of the job. Writing this story, and interviewing someone I look up to as a role model was huge for me in overcoming this challenge. The confidence I gained from completing this story has enabled me to be more comfortable in this aspect of the job.
