Last weekend saw a group of Taree and District Model Railway club members travel to Wauchope on an invitation from the Wauchope Miniature Railway Group. These chaps have taken their modelling to something very close to the real thing. They have laid their tracks to two gauges – five and a quarter inches and seven inches. So as you might imagine their locos and rolling stock are of a very impressive size.

They have built both working diesel and live steam locos based on NSW examples. The live steam loco is particularly interesting as it is a class 37 steamer. These were designed for introduction at the end of WWII. But for some reason never went into production or service.
Gordon Robbie was over the moon when he had the great experience of driving the loco. Everyone is looking forward to a return visit in the future, and those who didn’t go are more than a little envious.
The club is looking back over the past year with some very mixed emotions. Overall, however, it has been a very good year for the club. Whilst the start to the year was a little rocky we have gone onto achieve, we believe, very creditable progress on many fronts. Our membership has increased to a very pleasing degree. And we have got a first to our credit – this is the creation of a special membership definition to allow the application and acceptance of our first disabled member. The committee and club members are justly proud of this achievement.
As I believe I have mentioned we also elected a new president and treasurer at the AGM this year, and luckily our very efficient secretary, Glenn is once again at the helm. This combined with the very close work with the other sub committees has enabled us to complete a great deal of upgrading work on both Somerton and Wingham layouts.
Needless to say we are looking forward to what we believe can be an even better year in 2018.
Of course we extend an ever open invitation from anyone out there who thinks they may be interested to come along "and try before you buy". The Taree and District Model Railway Club rooms are located at 103 Manning Street, Taree. They are open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm.
