Bystanders watched as the shark, which was over one metre in length, thrashed about.
The shark had a bite mark on its right side.
South Coast Register journalist Courtney Ward said there were about 50 people on the beach watching.
“Everyone was looking at it and then one man who had been following it along the beach for a while got hold of it and helped it through the waves,” Mr Ward said.
“The waves kept washing it back in but the guy kept helping it out further past the waves. After a few goes the shark eventually swam off.”
