Dr Martin attended the Leprosy Mission Taree Auxiliary meeting on November 21 at Taree Presbyterian Church to present the award and revealed Phyll had to be urged to accept the nomination in recognition of more than 30 years on the Taree committee and 13 years as its president.
Phyll rightly felt she wasn’t entitled to this award in her own right. I think everything like this is a team thing and that is why I said to her, ‘I think you should accept it Phyll, take one for the team'.
- Dr Colin Martin
“I have known Phyll since 2009 and have been very impressed by her commitment and passion for what everybody here does.
“The work of this group in Taree is quite amazing. It is the last significant auxiliary in NSW. The world has changed a little in that women are now working and the ladies guilds that used to run these things are no longer active. There was a group at Berry but old age caught up with it.”
Dr Martin commended the auxiliary on its annual fundraising.
“$7000 a year is a lot of money for a smallish group of people in a country town to make.”
In accepting the award, Phyll said, “Colin hit the nail on the head when he said it’s not just what I do, it’s what the auxiliary does. We work together and it all works out so well. Thank you all very much from the bottom of my heart.”
