White Ribbon Australia has a vision of a nation that respects women; a nation in which every woman lives in safety, free from all forms of men’s abuse.
Across the Mid North Coast there are a number of initiatives aimed at achieving this vision including the annual coastal walk at Port Macquarie.
Men across the nation are being encouraged to take the oath against domestic violence. Last year a group of prominent individuals from the Manning region took the oath:
The oath is simple and you can go to the White Ribbon Australia website to register your intention.
Young people across the region are also being urged to play their part and learn more about the prevention of domestic violence. The Mid North Coast Local Health District is holding a White Ribbon Day breakfast.
Get the facts on domestic violence
White Ribbon uses the definition of men’s violence against women found in the United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women: ‘any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivations of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.’
The impact of this violence on women can be physical, sexual and psychological. Violence against women can also result in death: women die from the negative health effects of violence and some are killed.
