This year the open was a Vardon event, one of a series of such tournamentss for top golfers around the nation.
The Taree Open champion for 2017 is Greg Turner, who beat Stephen Webb of Wollongong in a three-hole playoff after both finished their rounds with 73s. The A-grade net winner was Rohan Abbott with a score of 70, a count back ahead of Tony McMaster (70) in second place with Nick Payne from Port Macquarie (71) third. Michael O’Keefe from Carnarvon won the net B-grade title with the best nett score of the day of 65. Runner up was Trevor Brown (70) on a count back from Ross Townsend (70) in third place. James Watkin was the C-grade winner with a net 71 followed by runner up John Daly (73) on a count back from third place getter Scott Provost (73),
Nearest to the pins were won by: Ray Matthews and K Welsh at the 1st; Stephen Webb, Jackson Wits and Graeme Pitman at the 4th; Stephen Webb and Paul Dalton at the 12th; R Moran, Trevor Brown and Scott Provost at the 14th; and Darren Yarnold and Os Bellamy at the 16th. Prizes for the long drives went to Stephen Web, Simon Magin and S Hopkins.
