A memorial service was held at Club Taree, where Taree RSL sub-branch members, army cadets, Taree High School representatives, Chief Inspector Christine George, mayor David West, newly-commissioned Anglican priest Father Peter Tinney, and members of the public met to pay their respects.
Taree RSL sub-branch secretary Dennis Lawrence estimated more than 120 people attended the Taree service.
“It went very well. We had a very good attendance; we were very, very pleased. We had very good weather and poppies were given out to everybody that was there because there were no poppies being sold in Taree” Dennis said.
At the service, MidCoast Council mayor David West said it was important for the young people of the region to hear the sacrifices and hardships of war.
“It’s very difficult for them to comprehend what our service personnel went through,” he said.
“In fact, it is very difficult for anyone who hasn’t experienced it themselves.”
Sub-branch secretary Dennis Lawrence added that he was very pleased that Taree High School laid a wreath at the commemoration service.
“It is always pleasant to see the young people attend these things,” he said.
The Wingham Memorial Town Hall was also filled with residents, RSL members and public school students.
One hundred years ago on November 10, the series of First World War battles known as the Third Battle of Ypres came to an end.
