“I’M a Wingham boy through and through.’’

So said an emotional Corey Brown after he steered Rekindling to a win in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

This is Brown’s second cup victory following his success on Shocking in 2009. Rekindling won from Johannes Vermer and Max Dynamite.

Brown’s wife, Kylie and three daughters were in the crowd to see Brown ride the winner. It was the first time his daugthers have been to the Melbourne Cup.

“I had a great run, but it wasn’t easy,’’ Brown said.

“This is a dream come true. I’m lost for words.

"I can't believe it. I have been back here from overseas about nine months and slowly and surely getting back to where I was," Brown told Channel Seven after the race.

"It is so special. I have my family with me and the girls are old enough to come to the races and enjoy it.’’

Brown was born in Wingham and started his riding career in the Mid North Coast Racing Association.

There was a huge cheer at Taree’s Bushland Drive track when it was confirmed Brown had won the cup. A big crowd again jammed into the track for the Melbourne Cup Day meeting.

Taree-Wingham Race Club (now Manning Valley Race Club) named the Corey Brown Pavilion at the Bushland Drive track in his honour after Brown won the 2009 cup.
