I have observed, initially from afar, but more recently at firsthand, the developing imbroglio between the residents of Hallidays Point and MidCoast Council, over the proposed introduction of a manufactured home estate at Tallwoods Village.

My observations are that council staff would appear to be unconditionally supporting the proponents of the estate, Gateway Lifestyle, to have the proposal approved by our recently elected council.
On face value there is nothing wrong with this, as elected councillors rely heavily on council’s professional staff. However my research indicates that this approach in this case, to say the least, is questionable.
It would appear that our council officers have not addressed the challenges and opportunities where the changing world of residential development is heading. I have not been able to find anything on the council’s website that we have a vision, strategy, policy or plan for the introduction of manufactured home estates, particularly on land zoned residential.
I therefore understand the widespread apprehension of Hallidays Point residents to this proposal. It would appear to me that similar applications, if this application is approved, may be made on any residential land in our MidCoast Council region, merely at a developer’s request.
In my view, dangerous stuff, based on poor or nonexistent planning.
I understand this proposal is set down for determination at Taree council chambers at 6pm on Thursday, November 2 – it may be wise to attend.
