Arriving in region on Friday February 2 the 16 will share the dream and carry the baton with pride on behalf of the MidCoast community. All were selected by the GC2018 Corporation based on their exceptional achievements, their contribution to the MidCoast region, and their ability to inspire others.
One is a bright and quirky 10 year old, Jordan Brown, who has autism. He has excelled in a number of areas such as ICAS, an Independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. Placing in the top one per cent of Australia in both science and maths, he has also represented his school in Futsal, soccer, dance, choir, cross country, athletics and swimming. Jordan is an inspiration to others as he strives to excel.
Jennefer Trott, has been selected based on her commitment to the local community. Jennefer is an active member of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and is the youngest person ever in the MidCoast region to qualify as a crew leader. She is involved in RFS community engagement work as well as working with local officers to run school cadet programs in the region’s high schools. She has been a training officer in the Nabiac brigade for the past three years, and is always on hand to assist new and younger members. Alongside this, she is an active member of the Nabiac RSL assisting veterans and the welfare of their families.
“I’m excited for the nominated batonbearers who will be a part of such a rich tradition. This will be a rare and unforgettable experience for these outstanding local community members,” MidCoast Council mayor David West said.
Since its launch from Buckingham Palace on March 13, where the Queen placed a message inside the baton, the relay has inspired athletes and fans across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and Europe. Currently the baton is in Malaysia and is set to visit the remaining 15 Commonwealth nations in Asia and Oceania before arriving in Brisbane on Christmas Eve for a further 100 days.
The Queen’s Baton arrives on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on April 4 where the Prince of Wales will remove the message from the baton and read it aloud to declare the Games open.
The full list of MidCoast representatives to carry the Baton through Forster Tuncurry is: Keith Pearce, Peter Sanders, Jordan Brown, Brooke Hosgood, Jennefer Trott, Terry Brooker, Laura Thurtell, Sarah Boddington, Dixie Ingram, Stephen Lee, Camden Ceccato, Warren Parr, Alysse Iverson, Cindy Tan, Doreen Wilson, and Frances Breen.
