Charity work and a “deep commitment to his school” earned the year 12 student the 2016 Bishop’s Award, according to the director of Catholic Schools, Dr Michael Slattery, and now the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is looking to honour three more students and present each with $1000 that can be used for their education or faith formation.
Dr Slattery commended Anthony on his deep commitment to St Clare’s and shared that the student also “plays an active role in the life of the parish through his management of the audio-visual equipment for the Saturday Vigil Mass and for Sacraments of Initiation.”
“He involves himself in the Carols by Candlelight activities held in the parish grounds as well as setting up stalls to raise funds for charity,” Dr Slattery said.

At St Clare’s he is a member of the St Vincent de Paul group and assists in preparing hampers for Christmas as well as participating in fundraising events for Caritas Australia.”
The Bishop's Award seeks to recognise the efforts of students and young people within the diocese who have contributed to the community through their parish, church group or church agency.
This may include involvement in groups or agencies such as Caritas, Youth Ministries, St Vincent de Paul Society, Mini Vinnies or similar church groups and also includes contributions made within parishes.
Students currently enrolled in catholic secondary schools within our diocese in years 7-11, students in years 7-11 and belonging to a parish within the diocese, and young Catholics from year 12 up to age 25 belonging to a parish within the diocese are encouraged to apply for the award. The Bishop's Award comprises three categories:
- Catholic Schools Students Bishop's Award
- Catholic Students Bishop's Award
- Catholic Young People Bishop's Award
In each category, there will be an award of $1000 which may contribute towards the student's or young person's education or faith formation such as World Youth Day, diocesan youth retreat, music ministry.
Applications close February 2, 2018 and forms can be downloaded here.
