The half-century (53) for the New South Wales’ Blues batsman was not the most prodigious he had ever scored, but the landmark he achieved in the process was.
His first innings of the year after returning from a broken finger took Larkin past 5000 runs in his first grade career. He has now scored 5019 runs at an average of 34.14 in Sydney’s premier cricket competition.
It was a patient day for the students with bat in hand, as they declared on the first innings at 8/257 from 88 overs. Along with Larkin, plenty of players made starts for University including Ben Trevor-Jones, who managed 48. The pair featured in a century opening stand.
Some tight bowling by Western Suburbs kept them in the contest. Jonathan Cook was the most miserly and effective of the bowlers returning 4-49 from 32 overs. The Magpies were 0/18 at the close of play.
