Taree Basketball’s revamped vehicle to drive junior basketball development into the future bounced into action on Tuesday afternoon when girls in the U14 to U18 age groups converged on Saxby’s Stadium for their ‘muster day’.

Interest was high with many girls across the three age groups indicating their willingness to be involved each week across school term four this year and school term one next year. Competition games will tip off next week with places still available for players who were unable to attend the ‘muster day’.

A similar event will be held today Friday, a muster day for players both girls and boys born from 2006 to 2012 will be held at Saxby’s Stadium.

Once numbers have been gauged in the young age groups on Saturdays, players will have fun and learn the fundamental skills of the game across three different divisions, Tiny Tornadoes, Super 10s and Super 12s.

Tiny Tornadoes will be for children born 2010 to 2012 and they will be on court from 9am to 10am each week; the Super 10s will run from 10.15am to 11.15am for children born 2008 or 2009 and the Super 12s for children born 2006 or 2007 will start at 11.30am and be all done in a hour.

The “Summer League” is the name coined by Taree Basketball for the development program for junior players and the emphasis will be on fun, learning the fundamental skills and providing competitive games each week.

All new and existing players are urged to get involved and there are opportunities for parents to support the children by volunteering to assist in whatever capacity you can to ensure the smooth running of the competitions.

Crowdy Head Surf Club was the venue last Sunday for the Taree Tornadoes junior representative basketball presentation day for the 2017 and what a great day it turned out to be with a big crowd in attendance.

The barbecue lunch fed the hungry masses, then trophies for the most improved player and most valuable player were awarded across the U12, U14, U16 and U18 age groups, the most improved referee and pennants were presented to members of all teams. Taree Basketball thanked everyone who contributed to the highly successful year experienced by the Taree Tornadoes junior teams and look forward to doing it all again next year.

The build up to 2018 is already under way and all players interested in playing for the Taree Tornadoes should note that the second representative trial is set down for Sunday, 15 October at Saxby’s Stadium from 10am to noon.
