Wingham is now officially home to the best beef jerky in NSW and the ACT.

Wingham Gourmet Meat and Chicken’s famous Texas Jerky took out the top award at the recent Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) annual Smallgoods Competition.

The results of the competition was announced at the NSW Meat Industry annual dinner held at West Tamworth Leagues Club on September 23.

“It’s great for our customers,” said Wingham Gourmet Meat and Chicken owner Scott Kelly.

Long serving butcher Bevan Brown is the man behind the award winning jerky.

Hot, Texas, sweet chilli and plain jerky make up the current range but Bevan has been working on some new flavours which should hit the shelves soon.

It is the first time that Scott and his team have entered the competition at a State level, though they are no strangers to winning.

With a shelf full of awards the team are regular finalists in the annual AMIC Sausage King competition and current champions on the Mid North Coast for their chicken, spinach and pine nut snags.

The Sausage King and Smallgoods Competitions are held annually and are only open to Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) members.

They are coordinated and run by AMIC to promote independent local butchers and publicise sausages and burgers and smallgoods as tasty and healthy meat products to consumers, increasing their knowledge of varieties, taste, composition, and recipe ideas.

The competition brings butchers from different regions together allowing them to show off and share knowledge about what they do best.

The competition starts off at a regional level across Australia, before moving to the six State finals, then culminating in a national competition, which is held in a different state each year.

The winners will compete in the national final in Melbourne in February 2018.

Scott took over the reigns of Wingham Gourmet Meat and Chicken in July 2014.

The recent win is his biggest to date and the impressive State cup now sits proudly on the counter of the Isabella Street store.

“The customer’s think it’s great,” said Scott.
