About 4.30am, the man was riding a bicycle through the centre before confronting a female attendant at the petrol station with a large kitchen knife.
He demanded money before the attendant and another employee locked themselves in a room.
The offender then attempted to cut through security wiring to reach the registers.
After failing to open the registers, he attempted to leave but was stopped by a locked door.
He attempted to open the door at which time Manning Great Lakes police arrived.
They subdued him with capsicum spray before he was disarmed, arrested and taken to Taree Police Station.
He was charged with robbery whilst armed with an offensive weapon and appeared in Taree Local Court on Tuesday, October 3.
No one was injured in the incident.
