Climate Change Australia Hastings will on Saturday attempt the biggest human sign event ever staged in the area.
The action on Town Beach is part of a growing community push opposing a planned mega coal mine in Queensland.
The group’s president, Kerri-ann Jones, said the human sign will spell two simple words – Stop Adani.
Adani is the billionaire Indian coal miner who wants to build the biggest coal mine in Australia’s history, a mega mine in north Queensland.
“Bring your family, friends, neighbours, colleagues ... this is a family friendly, fun, peaceful event. We need as many people as possible to send a message to our politicians - together we can Stop Adani,” Ms Jones said.
“Wear something red and/or your #StopAdani shirt, so we really stand out, and bring sun protection, an umbrella if the sun is out, drinking water, and any signs and placards you have.
“We can also supply some,” she said.
“Thousands of people around Australia will be making clear our opposition to this mega coal mine. State and federal governments have promised Adani free coal, free water and $1 billion.
“The government’s plan to spend $1 billion on this project would be the biggest waste of taxpayers’ money ever.
“One thing is sure, if this mine goes ahead, the Great Barrier Reef, our precious icon of Aussie natural beauty, is finished.
“The world’s top ocean scientists have made it clear - to protect the Reef, we have to move beyond coal,” Ms Jones said.
The group’s president said the massive human sign is a creative display of opposition to this dirty coal mine and the controversial $1 billion of public money it could receive.
“We’re going to spell it out for our politicians, we want them to Stop Adani,” she added.
The action is on Saturday October 7 on Town Beach at 2pm.
