Free dementia information sessions are coming to Laurieton and South West Rocks as part of Dementia Awareness Month.
This September, Australians are being encouraged to find out more about dementia during Dementia Awareness Month, to elevate awareness about the disease and the impact on people living with it and their carers and families.
As part of the month, the Hastings Macleay Dementia Action Group will host two free Living with Dementia information sessions for anyone interested in knowing more about the disease.
Attendees will hear from people living with dementia and their carers, as well as expert strategies for quality engagement and links to support services in the local area.
The two sessions will be hosted from 10 am on Wednesday 20 September at South West Rocks Country Club, 2 Sportsman’s Way, South West Rocks, and on Wednesday 27 September from 10 am at Mountain View Room, Laurieton United Services Club, 2 Seymour St, Laurieton.
For more information or to register, call 02 6584 7444 or email NSW.MidNorthCoast@alzheimers.org.au
Alzheimer’s Australia will host a number of events as part of Dementia Awareness Month. The full calendar of events with links to activities across Australia can be viewed at www.fightdementia.org.au/dementia-awareness-month.
The theme of Dementia Awareness Month this year is You are not alone and across the country, Alzheimer’s Australia will communicate that there is support and services available to people living with dementia from Alzheimer’s Australia and other organisations.
Over 70 per cent of Australians admit that they know very little about the dementia and almost half of the population do not realise that it is fatal.
While most people living with dementia are older, 25,938 Aussies are currently living with Younger Onset Dementia (YOD), a term used to describe anyone living with any form of dementia under the age of 65.
There are also resources available for healthcare professionals for assisting the people they work with in managing the day-to-day and big picture challenges that dementia can bring.
There are 413,000 Australians living with dementia and that number is expected to rise to 1.1 million by 2056.
Dementia Awareness Month 2017 is supported by the Australian Government.
