The New South Wales Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) was formed in 1969 and currently has about 3700 members and consists of 42 general land rescue squads, three specialist squads and 13 support squads.
Officially opened in 1975, the Taree Rescue Squad has proudly been the primary rescue agency for the Manning district and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week all year round.
The Taree Rescue squad is made up of highly trained volunteers and responds to motor vehicle, domestic and industrial accidents, vertical/cliff, confined space, inland water and animal rescues, body recoveries, emergency lighting, traffic control and other incidents that occur from time to time.
The squad also assists other services such as NSW Police and NSW Ambulance.
Volunteer rescue operators obtain life time skills similar to Surf Life Saving Clubs or nurses at no cost which will be provided in-house.
Members are required to attend weekly training sessions, be available to attend emergency call-outs, be able to follow a chain of command and have exceptionally high standards of professionalism and commitment to the community to which the squad provides emergency assistance.
Prospective members are required to obtain a criminal history check, a “working with children” certificate and a first aid certificate. The first aid certificate will be maintained by the Taree Rescue Squad once members become accredited rescue operators.
Volunteer rescue operator are supplied with uniforms, gloves, eye protection, a helmet and gear bag.
