“It’s a Cinderella story.” That’s how Taree Tornadoes U12 girls’ coach, Col Scott describes the unprecedented success of the team in the 2017 Molten Waratah League State Basketball Cup.

The team took the silver medal on the main court at Newcastle Basketball Stadium in Broadmeadow on August  26-27.

Scott said the team “started to turned heads in the Coast to Coast Seaside Classic at Port Macquarie, then rolled into Coffs Harbour to make the final where it took an interstate championship team in Ipswich QLD to beat our girls.”

2017 has been a year of transformation, said Scott.

“We made up a team of 10 girls from netballers, soccer players, touch football players, ballers and some had never even played team or representative sports.

“The commitment shown by all the girls and parents to have their girls come to train once a week at the PCYC was truly instrumental in the girls’ achievements throughout 2017.

“Their basketball IQ increased by the end of the season and was noticed by all, not only myself and the Taree Tornadoes, but all associations which played us from EJL / NJL all the way to State Cup.”

Taree Basketball Association president Paul Healy congratulated the team, parents and supporters – “you have carried the Taree Basketball flag deeper into this level of competition than any other previous team.”
