After graduation, marriages, careers and divergent paths of adult life, has weakened what was meant to be a four-way lifelong union.
Ryan (Regina Hall), is an author who is invited to be a keynote speaker at the upcoming Essence Festival in New Orleans.
She calls on the girls to posse up for a luxury weekend of girl time.
Sasha (Queen Latifah) – is a celebrity gossip blogger who fell out with Ryan after she nixed their website deal; Lisa (Jada Pinkett-Smith) - is a prim and proper divorced nurse and mother of two who used to be a sexual dynamo back in the day; and Dina (Tiffany Haddish) – is a hard-partying motor mouth who lives to stir up trouble.
Along the way, they rekindle their sisterhood and rediscover their wild side by dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing.
That said, this sisterhood of four gets down and dirty at times and there are some references that will only be known to US audiences and therefore fall a little flat elsewhere.
Of course humour needs to be balanced with pathos and matters take a serious turn when many difficult truths must be confronted among the fast talking, slick dressing quartet.
Girls trip also stars Kat Walsh and Mike Colter, and if opening weekend in the US is anything to go by, it will be a success for all.
