MANNING Valley Anglican College year six student Scott Walker has been named goal keeper for the NSW Independent Schools football team to contest the NSW PSSA Championships.

Scott, 11, will head to Inverell for the State all schools championships in a fortnight. The independent schools side will tackle the State public and Catholic Schools combinations. A NSW All Schools side will be named at the conclusion.
Scott is the Manning River Times-Iguana Sportstar of the Week, earning a $50 open order at Iguana. He was nominated by Manning Valley Anglican College.
Scott was invited to trial for the State side, initially at Cessnock, where he first impressed selectors, before heading to the second and last round held in Sydney.
He thought he went ‘pretty well’ in the trials but wasn’t too confident about his chances of making the State squad. Now he’s looking forward to representing NSW for the first time.
Scott hasn’t given too much thought about his chances of making the State All Schools team. He reasons it will probably depend on how well his side performs in Inverell.
This is the first major representative side he’s made in football.
Scott plays for Wingham Warriors in the southern age under 12 competition. The Warriors have had a reasonable year, but currently sit in eighth place after 12 matches.
Scott started playing soccer when he was in the under sixes.
Initially he was in the field before he made the switch to goal keeper.
“I was at training the the coach decided to put me in goals,’’ he said.
That was when he was about nine. He’s been there ever since.
Soccer is his main sporting passion. He mixes the traditional form of the game with futsal, the at times frantic five-a-side indoor variety.
Here Scott also plays in goals.
He was a member of the Manning-dominated Northern NSW team that contested the Australian championships played in sweltering conditions in Sydney earlier in the year. He was again the goal keeper.
Scott’s side didn’t have a particularly successful campaign.
“We finished last,’’ he explained.
However, Scott showed enough form to impress selectors and now he’ll be heading to Hawaii for a two week tour in December with an Australian under 12 team.
Scott said he ‘can’t wait’ to jet off with his team mates.
At this stage he isn’t too sure of the itinerary for the tour.
While futsal is runs in winter and summer, Scott confines himself to the summer because of his commitments with the Wingham side.
