NSW electoral commissioner John Schmidt encouraged all potential MidCoast council candidates to get their nominations in as soon as possible. Nominations close on Wednesday, August 9 at noon.
“The deadline will be strictly enforced. To avoid any problems with the nomination, candidates should lodge as early as possible,” he said.
“A candidate must be properly enrolled in the council they wish to represent and must either be nominated by at least two people who are correctly enrolled in the same council area or ward, or by a registered political party.”
Candidate names will be published online at https://candidates.elections.nsw.gov.au/ as they are accepted.
Nominations must be lodged with the MidCoast returning officer’s office.
No nominations had been listed at time of writing.
Official agents are responsible for managing the political donations and electoral expenditure of candidates and groups.
There are strict legal requirements for political donations and electoral expenditure that must be complied with. There are now caps on political donations at local council elections.
“Candidates, political parties, third-party campaigners and political donors should acquaint themselves with the rules for election campaign finances. Candidates and groups must also be registered with the NSW Electoral Commission before accepting donations or incurring campaign expenses,’’ Mr Schmidt said.
"There are limits on the amounts that can be donated to any registered political parties or groups, which are now capped at $6100, and a $2700 cap to unregistered parties, councillors, candidates and third-party campaigners. Third party campaigners must be registered before incurring more than $2000 on electoral communication expenditure.’’
The election of MidCoast Council will take place on Saturday, September 9 where 11 councilors (including a mayor and deputy mayor) will be chosen.
