Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) will host the inaugural Women’s State Cup Competition over the weekend of September 22–24 at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility in Speers Point.
Pool B will pit Football Mid North Coast against Northern Inland Football (Armidale), Thornton Redbacks, Dudley Redhead and New Lambton.
Senior women’s teams across Northern NSW will have the opportunity to play against senior teams from other zones and from within the Herald Women’s Premier League competition for the first time in a sanctioned competition while also giving teams the opportunity to play at the start of the art facility.
The establishment of the Women’s State Cup was a strategic initiative for Northern NSW Football in the 2016-2019 strategic plan which outlines Northern NSW Football’s aim to be a leading organisation for females.
NNSWF is committed to improving the experience of all participants and is aiming to lift the number of female registered players to 25 per cent by 2020, events like this provide more opportunities for women to enjoy the sport and move towards ensuring that the opportunities for females reflect those that are currently available for males players.
The men’s State Cup which was introduced in 2012 transitioned into the Nationwide competition Westfield FFA Cup in 2015 including PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues (NPL) teams as well as Hyundai A-League teams.
The Women’s State Cup could be a stepping stone for a National Women’s FFA Cup as States across Australia move to align their Premier Women’s Competition with the PS4 NPL format. Northern NSW Football will be starting a review this year of the Herald WPL and the viability of transitioning the competition into the NPL format.
