A top of 26C has been forecast for Maitland, Cessnock and Singleton on Sunday.
Weatherwatch meteorologist Anthony Cornelius said the unseasonably warm weather was due to two factors.
He said in the past few months there had not been many cold fronts, which had pushed heat north.
The second factor is a large cold front that is on the way to southern parts of the country, which is expected to drag the northern heat to the south.
If the mercury passes 25.9C on Sunday, it will be the hottest July day recorded in Maitland and Cessnock.
“It’s very, very rare to get these temperatures in July,” Mr Cornelius said.
The hot conditions are set to arrive less than two weeks after snow fell at Barrington Tops.
Paterson’s hottest July day on record was in 1990 when the temperature reached 27.3C.
Typical winter conditions are set return on Monday with a top of 19C and a shower or two expected.
