The fully escorted ride is “open to anybody with a horse,” from able Western style riders to dressage.
“There are so many different genres of riding,” said Special Olympics Mid North Coast’s Sharon Chamberlain.
“We want it to be a fun, relaxing get together to raise funds for the Special Olympics team.”
Sixteen athletes from Special Olympics Mid North Coast made the State team including Sharon’s daughter, Jasmine.
Jasmine’s love of horses has helped her succeed in her sport and given her confidence a boost in all areas of her life.
A rare genetic triplication (connective tissue disorder) has seen Jasmine riddled with pain and limitations all her life but she has big dreams as a rider.
Richard Paff of Taree Equestrian Centre will take the trail riders through the Koorainghat Nature Reserve’s diverse habitats and forests.
Riders have the option of completing a 10km or 20km ride before enjoying a barbecue lunch and tea and cookies.
It is the first time the trail ride has been held and Sharon and the Taree Equestrian Centre team have high hopes of it turning into an annual event.
“Whatever size it is, it is going to happen but we want it to be huge,” said Sharon.
“We’re hoping for 50-75 riders, that would be great,” she added.
