The Wildcats hammered Saints 5-1 in a deferred match at Port Macquarie on the Wednesday night.
“It was like the Wednesday match didn’t stop,’’ Taree coach Rod Bartley said.
“The first 20 to 25 minutes of the game was probably the best we’ve played in two seasons. We created chances and we took them.’’
The Wildcats put two early goals on Saints to take a stranglehold on the result. Port fought back towards the end of the half, but couldn’t find a gap in the Taree defence.
“Saints had only conceded 12 goals in nine games. We put nine on them in two,’’ Bartley said.
Taree maintained the pressure in the second stanza.
“We missed a couple of opportunities as well – the score could have got ugly,’’ Bartley said.
Jordan Howard, Ricky Campbell, Jackson Witts and Macabe Grass found the net for Taree.
Grass, 16, was named players’ player following a dominating performance. Bartley said Taree’s midfield was again strong and this was a highlight of the effort.
The Wildcats are now outright fifth, but only a point behind Port Saints, Port United and Wallis Lake, the equal second placed sides. Saints have a game in hand.
Taree also has a three point buffer on sixth placed Tuncurry-Forster.
“There’s five matches to go and that’s 15 points so we have a great chance to move into the top two or three,’’ Bartley said.
“That was our goal at the start of the year. We also have a bye in hand, so that will be helpful.’’
Taree plays last placed Wauchope at Wauchope on Saturday.
