The Taree and District Careers and Future Options Expo will be held at Chatham High School on Friday July 28 beginning at 9am and going through to noon.
The day is organised and managed by a small team of local careers advisers from Chatham, Taree, Wingham and the Great Lakes Areas and 1000 local students from Years 10, 11 and 12 are expected to attend.
The event is free for all students whether they attend a private or public school.
The expo has it’s origins in the 1980’s where local students would bus their way up to Port Macquarie, but since 2002 the expo has been held locally within the Chatham High School Multi Purpose Centre.
It is designed to cater for the school transition needs of all local students, private and public, whether they are university bound, vocational or trade focused or looking to join the local workforce. The event helps assist regional disadvantage by allowing students to be able to interact with a host of post-school transition options that they would normally have to travel great distance to access.
The expo is designed to be a “one stop” shop of over 50 exhibitor booths for students and their parents or carers to discuss as many post–school tertiary and employment options as possible.

In attendance are all the major universities in NSW and Southern Queensland; private vocationally orientated colleges offering a broad range of course options, TAFE, Police and the Australian Defence Force, local job service providers and as well as local employers and government services.
For Year 12 students considering university entry, the expo coincides with the opening of the university application process and students can pick up valuable hints on alternate entry schemes such as “early entry” and bonus ATAR ranks. Year 12 students could benefit from bringing their University Admission Centre (UAC) Guides to the expo. For 2017 university entry, there are many changes from past years that students need to be aware of and students and parents can enquire about these changes from the Universities Admission Centre booth just inside the entrance.
To make the most of this opportunity students are encouraged to research course options, early entry schemes, scholarship opportunities and employment prospects. For Year 10 students currently undertaking Higher School Certificate subject selection will gain much about the importance of selecting course options that benefit their plans.
The Careers And Future Options Expo and the sister event in Port Macquarie are managed by the Lower North Coast Careers Advisers Association with support from the NSW Department of Education and the assistance of staff and students of Chatham High School.
