The Sydney Morning Herald’s music critic Peter McCallum, clearly agreed with the judge’s decision when he praised Gugnin’s victory saying “At the end of the first night of the 19th- and 20th-century concerto round, the last of the Herculean labours that the Sydney International Piano Competition requires of its competitors, Russian pianist Andrey Gugnin gave a cut-through performance of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3.
He set a high watermark…the following evening, with a sterling reading of Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat. Gugnin's nervy, energised and involved playing, high technical development and feel for Prokofiev's imaginative scope, from the dreamy and romantic to the spiky and grotesque, made him the clear winner.”
Andrey’s recital will include Johann Sebastian Bach: Adagio in G Major, Schubert: Piano Sonata No.17 in D Major, Shostakovich: Piano Sonata No.1 Op.12, Leonid Desyatnikov: "Reminiscences of the Theatre", Igor Stravinsky: Trois Mouvements de Pétrouchka, and in a nod to contemporary music culture – the intriguingly named “48 Fugues for Frank Zappa No.6: G-Spot Tornado” by Michael Kieran Harvey.
The Sunday matinee commences at 2pm and duration is approximately 1 hour 50 minutes including interval.
Russian Ballet
The forever romance, the hundred year classic, some of the most heart-warming dancing you will see this year. The Russian National Ballet Theatre returns to Australia with one of the world's greatest classic ballets: Romeo and Juliet. The seamless choreography of Evgeny Amosov is based on the Prokofiev ballet in three acts. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. This dramatic ballet stays loyal to Shakespeare’s original tragic ending with a romantic pas de deux, taut fight scenes and festive street dances that will leave you enthralled.
The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The creation of the theatre was in response to the enormous creative wealth of promising young dancers and performing artists, both classical and contemporary. Now you have the chance to see these talented artists in the flesh at the Manning Entertainment Centre on Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd of September. Tickets on sale now!
