However, a family holiday may thwart his ambition. Mathiske will be heading to Tahiti to race before making a stopover in the USA to visit Disneyland. The Mathiskes will be heading home via Kona, Hawaii, where theyll cheer on Troy Croker as he contests the World Ironman Triathlon Championship. Theyll arrive home just before the nationals are about to start. So unless he can find a bike to train on while away, its unlikely Mathiske will be riding for a national medal.
In a lengthy interview on the Times Facebook page with Mick McDonald in Friday Sport Talk, Mathiske spoke of his cycling career, his current purple patch of form with Team Ultra and his love for the sport. He also recalls riding his bike from Brisbane to Taree in 2001 after he left the army.
