Last year Garry along with his daughter Joanna, trained and ran the Sydney City to Surf, a 14km run, but this year he has taken on a greater challenge: a marathon.
Many people have seen Garry out and about over the last month as he has begun serious training in preparation for the 42km Gold Coast marathon on Sunday, July 2.
Garry will be running from Runaway Bay to Burleigh Heads and back again along with the other 27,000 participants. Garry, who recently turned 54, said “I run to maintain my fitness but I also appreciate the great physical, mental and emotional benefits of running”.
Garry will again run in support of local charity Can Assist Manning Valley and aims to raise $3000 dollars.
“In our work in the funeral industry we see first hand the effect cancer has on families,” he said.
“Many families who come us share how Can Assist have helped their family during this very difficult time.”
Can Assist offers practical support and financial assistance to local cancer patients and their families.
“The Can Assist team are a passionate and caring group of volunteers who are really making a difference to these families,” Garry said.
“Training for the maraton has been tough, really tough. It helps me to remember the families who Can Assist supports and what they are going through, now that is tough.” To donate please contact manningvalley@canassist.com.au or call Leanne from Can Assist on 0429 425 129.
