Newcastle Herald photographer Jonathan Carroll has spent the past 12 months trekking across the Hunter to put his own spin on the night sky.
The project, which started out as Carroll’s tribute to another space oddity, David Bowie, eventually morphed into an exploration of the Milky Way, as seen from the Hunter. Carroll searched out the Hunter’s darkest horizons – from Eaglereach to Hawks Nest – and, using a mixture of 30-second-plus exposures and layered silhouettes, created a series that presents the night sky as a striking palette of celestial beauty.
“I’ve always wanted to explore the Milky Way but I wanted to do it in my own unique way,” Carroll said.
But who is the Space Cowboy? Well, the artist is present.
