CURTAIN CALL – with Helen Knight from the Manning Entertainment Centre
Harry does Hamlet (sort of)
Our June OnScreen film may well attract both Harry Potter fans and film buffs who enjoyed “Shakespeare in Love”. The Potter fans will come for the lead actor, Daniel Radcliffe, and those who loved “Shakespeare in Love” will come for the playwright/ screenwriter, Tom Stoppard. It’s 50 years since Stoppard premiered his play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It had begun life entitled “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Meet King Lear”, before being lengthened and given the current title. The production was a hit and propelled Tom Stoppard to fame, beginning a long and esteemed career as playwright and film screenwriter.

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, The Woman in Black), Joshua McGuire (The Hour) and David Haig (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Witness for the Prosecution) star in Tom Stoppard’s brilliantly funny situation comedy, broadcast from The Old Vic theatre in London. Against the backdrop of Hamlet, two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, take centre stage. As the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of Shakespeare’s iconic drama, they become increasingly out of their depth as their version of the story unfolds.
It’s another notch in the stage acting belt for Daniel Radcliffe who has garnered critical acclaim for his forays onto the stage, with winning performances in plays from the UK’s National Theatre to New York’s Broadway. His partnership with Joshua McGuire is described as a “delightful double act” by the Daily Telegraph, and the Observer observes that the play “fizzes with life” in their hands. It’s definitely an OnScreen to see, and you can take it in on Tuesday June 27 at 10am or 7pm.
