The Rotary Club of Taree will celebrate a milestone birthday this weekend with an 80th birthday dinner at Club Taree on Saturday, May 27.
Past and present Rotarians and relations have been invited to attend the celebrations.
The Rotary Club of Taree has, over the years, contributed in many ways in fundraising activities, manning gates for shows and carnivals as well as forming successful Probus Clubs in the Taree area.
A number of landmark features have also been established over the years with the earliest probably being the avenue of Jacarandas south of Taree in 1955.
Projects in our community
- Karingal Nursing Home was established in 1970 with the support of the Rotary Club of Taree following a suggestion by Rotary member Dr Muscio at a Chamber of Commerce meeting
- Tree planting: Jacarandas on southern approach to Martin Bridge and along Manning River Drive in front of Taree Aquatic Centre in 2005 to celebrate the Centenary of Rotary
- Flag pole in Fotheringham Park in 1955, recently refurbished
- Road Safety Park created in 1962 under president Cliff Douglass near the town tennis courts which is now a children’s playground
- A row of oleander trees near Taree Railway Station in 1972
- Rotary Park at Chatham created in 1979
- Bicentennial Park on Brown’s Creek in 1988
- Bowel Scan program: This program has helped to diagnose a number of people with bowel cancer before it reached a critical stage
- Pride of Workmanship where people and businesses are recognized for the extra effort put into their vocations

RYDA
The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program was initiated by the club and aims to make young drivers aware of the hazards when driving.
This program commenced in Taree and is now run each year in Taree with other local Rotary District 9650 clubs participating.
Other youth programs
Rotary are continuously running many other youth programs such as Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) seminars, all aimed at communicating to young people a series of ideas problems and social experiences that assist them to form their own values and moral standards.
The Model United Nations (MUN) is an assembly which simulates the working of the United Nations. There is also a public speaking program and the National Youth Summer Science Forum (NYSSF) is for science students seeking a career in science.
