Rain of biblical proportions was predicted for the day the weekly 5km run along the Manning River foreshore was to turn two. Organisers warned those attending the bring an umbrella.
There was some overnight precipitation and Saturday morning dawned cloudy. However, come 7.30 when the official function started to mark the anniversary the weather began to improve. It was close to perfect when the runners headed off a touch after 8am for the 105th parkrun held here since May 2015. In that time there’s never been a parkrun lost to poor weather, although two went ahead in torrential rain.
“It’ll start to rain just as we’ve finished packing up,’’ parkrun official Janelle Jefferies predicted.
And, as it came to pass, it did.
Earlier Mark Primmer was named the parkrunner of the year for the support he gives to the event each week. Other awards were presented to Brooke Hosgood for the most consistent junior, Jan Swift (most consistent female), Jim Tyrepenou (most consistent male).
Tara Copp’s effort in volunteering 28 times in the last 12 months – comfortably the most – was also rewarded.
Kelvin Chilvers, the parkrun territory director for the North Coast attended and took part in the run. Organisers had hoped to top the 200 mark for starters for the first time, however, there were 133 finishers.
The 106th Taree parkrun will be held next Saturday, starting at Endeavour Place from 8am.
