Excellence in health and wellbeing
Winner: Valley Industries
MRT: How long has Valley Industries been operating?
VI: Valley Industries originally opened its doors in the Manning Valley in 1971.
Since that time the business has grown substantially to become the largest provider of high quality services, employment and growth opportunities for people with disability in the Mid-North Coast.
MRT: What is the purpose of the business?
VI: Over the last 40 years, Valley Industries has evolved into three distinct parts – service provision, social enterprise and commercial enterprise.
From those early days when there were around 20 staff and 20 participants, there are now 13 separate business units with 180 employees and 230 participants.
Valley Skills for Life provides a wide range of activities of a very high standard – offering people with disability to learn a new skill, build their self-esteem and have fun.
The business units in Whitbread Street offer valuable employment in the nursery, bee-keeping, timber products and secure document services.
Valley Café and Valley Vintage are both thriving businesses where participants can learn valuable skills, increase their confidence and become active members of the community.
MRT: What does this nomination mean to you and your business?
VI: Winning this award is a tremendous reward for all the staff and participants at Valley Industries and recognises the great work that is done every day of the year!
MRT: What are the future directions or goals for your business?
VI: As one of the main providers of support to people with disability in the Manning Valley for over 45 years, Valley Industries is very well placed to manage the transition to the NDIS as it rolls out across the region. As the opportunities and support for people with disability grow, so too will the services and activities provided by Valley Industries to enrich their lives.
