JR Richards and Sons, waste education officer, Megan Griffiths will be running the workshop on Wednesday May 24 from 9.30-11am at the Midcoast Council Gloucester Office Committee Room.
The key message from the workshop is to change how the community views garbage, instead of thinking of it as “waste”, to think of it as a resource.
“Over $1000 per household per year is sent to landfill, which could be easily eaten, or composted at home,” Megan said.
“Most people aren’t into composting, but are happy to go to the garden centre and buy a bag of it, costing them more money.”
“It’s too easy for us to throw out food when it becomes soft, but little thought goes to the water was used to grow it, the farmers time spent in the fields, the fuel needed to transport it to the shops, or the time we spent away from our loved ones working to afford that food we just threw in the bin,” Megan said.
“Taking these things in to consideration makes you rethink how much you buy, and how much of it gets thrown away.”
