The 15-year-old secured the gold medal in the under 17s javelin final at the 2017 Australian Athletics Championships, beating out competitors from NSW, Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria with a 56.59 metre throw in the final.
The secret to his success? Training in his backyard with his father, Brett.
Brendan began his career in shot put and discus and excelled from the age of eight.
In 2010, he placed third in the shot put and discus at the Nationals event in the Northern Territory.
He followed this up with second place in shot put and third in discus at Nationals the following year.
Brendan spent the next few years developing his technique while learning the basics of javelin.
Last year, he claimed State and NSW Youth javelin titles.
His father Brett said his results in javelin have been off the back of a strong commitment to the sport.
“I’m very proud of him for that,” Brett said.
With his experience at a National level, Brendan would have to compete in the under 18s division of the National Championships next year at just 16-years of age (permitting he qualifies).
If javelin is not enough to keep him busy, Brendan can be found surfing, spear fishing and playing for Forster-Tuncurry in the Football Mid North Coast competition. Javelin events are not run during winter months.
