The series ran from 1966 to 1973 but the 1996 hit movie starring Tom Cruise has already spawned four sequels that have grossed more than $US2.7 billion ($3.7 billion) with more to come.

2. Star Trek

The Gene Roddenberry series first ran from 1966 to 1969 and resulted in 10 films starring cast members from various TV spin-offs. But the 2009 reboot starring Chris Pine led to three films, which grossed more than $US1.1 billion worldwide.

3. Fugitive

The series ran from 1963 to 1967 and the 1993 film starring Harrison Ford grossed more than $US360 million worldwide.

4. 21 Jump Street

The TV series starring Johnny Depp ran from 1987 to 1991. The 2012 film starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill grossed more than $US200 million worldwide and its 2014 sequel, 22 Jump Street, made more than $US330 million.

5. Traffic

Based on the 1989 UK mini-series Traffik, the 2000 crime drama won four Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Benicio Del Toro and grossed more than $US200 million worldwide.

Worst

1. Land of the Lost

The popular series ran from 1974 to 1977, but the 2009 film starring Will Ferrell was considered a colossal box-office failure with only $US68 million worldwide.

2. Bewitched

Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman starred in the 2005 box-office flop, which was based on the 1964-72 series and has a 25 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

3. The A-Team

Not even Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper could save the 2010 financial and critical flop based on the 1983-87 series.

4. The Lone Ranger

The 2013 film inspired by the 1949-57 TV series was an embarrassing loss for Disney and Johnny Depp, who was criticised for playing a native American Indian, Tonto.

5. CHiPs

This film, based on the 1977-83 series, opened last month and was dead on arrival at the box-office.
