The bleak and powerful Frank Hurley photograph of No Man’s Land wrapped the 20-page booklet and as they opened its pages to read the words, images of Flanders Fields in 1917 thrust the reality of a 100-year-old war into the present day.
Dawn service and commemoration service master of ceremonies, Dennis Lawrence publicly praised the quality and presentation of the booklet and offered up the name of its creator to the community - Club Taree marketing officer Courtney Berry.
Courtney said she was moved by the praise and delighted that her work added to the experience of Anzac Day for people who attended the Taree services.
The 25-year-old Taree resident cited her “adopted grandfather, Grayson Woods” and the community of returned servicemen and women who visit Club Taree as having nurtured her connection and heartfelt commitment to commemorating Anzac Day.
“Anzac Day is so special to me. Everything I do in relation to Anzac Day is done with my adopted grandfather, Grayson Woods in my heart and mind,” Courtney said. “He served in World War II.”
“My job at Club Taree has allowed me to get to know so many servicemen and women and I also work closely with Taree RSL Sub Branch.”
Courtney said she wanted to “create something special, particularly as it’s the centenary” and was delighted by the positive feedback received from the sub branch to the concept and design.
The booklet also included information about the ‘To Flanders Fields 1917’ exhibition at Club Taree.
Assistant director of the Australian War Memorial, Anne Bennie will visit Taree on May 3 to officially open the exhibition that will be on display until May 30.
‘To Flanders Fields 1917’ is the second in a series of three exhibitions that will be hosted at Club Taree during the Centenary of Anzac.
