Vivien Knox was walking her dog Lucy along Dolphin Avenue at Taree West when the large dog broke free from its owner on the other side of the street.
It then latched onto Lucy’s neck and refused to let go.
Nearby residents and the owner of the large dog attempted to save Lucy but to no avail.
Daughter-in-law Ciara Knox described Vivien as “shattered” following the incident.
“Lucy is irreplaceable,” Mrs Knox said. “Vivien is such an incredibly loving, caring lady who thrives on doing things for others around her.
“She deserves to have something in her life that she can love and care for and in return it will provide her with the happiness and companionship that she needs,” Mrs Knox said.
Manning Great Lakes Police Command chief inspector Allan Fidock said the incident will be put into the hands of MidCoast Council under the Companion Animals Act. Any action to be taken against the dog and its owners are unknown at this time. Lucy was considered Vivien’s constant companion after her husband Adrian died of cancer six months ago.
A Go Fund Me page entitled ‘Lucy’s Legacy’ has been set up to raise $2500 to purchase another Cavalier for Vivien. In the first day, it had reached $300.
The funds will also cover desexing, vaccinations and general costs.
