The concept was arrived at through the combination of two Australian and NSW stalwarts of the game of bowls – Rex “Paddles” Johnston OAM of Zone 11 and Arthur Black of Zone One.
Arthur Black was a very successful bowler in and for Zone One, representing Australia in Trans-Tasman Tests and at the Commonwealth Games. His Australian cap number is 76.
The exploits of Rex “Paddles” Johnston, whose cap number is 93, are well known throughout the world bowls fraternity. He has represented Australia on some 450 occasions and played in four Commonwealth Games. He rightly could be considered the most decorated bowler in Australia.
In 2016, the result of the initial contest saw Zone 11 being victorious over two days at Maclean Bowling Club. No doubt, the Zone One boys will be keen to wrest the Shield from our men when they meet this month.
The venue for the clash is Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, next Sunday and Monday (April 23 and 24). The first game starts at 1pm with two to be played on the Sunday afternoon. The third game will be played on Monday from 9am.
