Now the first ever Symphony of the Earth Scout badges have been awarded to the First Wingham Scouts cubs, plans are afoot to spread the badge to other scouting units.
The badge program was designed by Wingham Cub leader Kerry ‘Kaa’ Guppy right here in Wingham, and she hopes to spread the badge to scouting packs internationally.
After the two-night program was completed and cubs presented with their camp blanket badges, Kerry has now already received interest in the badge program from other Scout packs in the district, which covers Forster/Tuncurry, Bulahdelah, Wingham and Taree.
Rachelle Worth, a Joey leader from Gloucester, is going to assist Kerry with the program.
Kerry is also getting advice from the Victorian Scout Executive Team on how to take the program further, after she sent the Wingham Chronicle stories about the Symphony of the Earth Scouts badge to the team and told them “let’s talk!”.
Kerry is now redesigning the program to be suitable for the older Scouts in Wingham to complete, with help from the Venturers.
Wingham Venturer Tim Walker is undertaking the highest award in scouting – the Scout Medallion – which contains a leadership project aspect.
For his leadership project, Tim is helping Kerrie with the administration, the setting out and creation of the Symphony of the Earth badge program for the Scouts.
Kerry had the first batch of 100 badges created in Singapore.
“The quality is really, really good,” Kerry said, adding that the might change the background material for the next order.
“That will put some value on the first 100 as they will be slightly different from the next ones. They will become collectors’ items,” Kerrie said.
“The first 100 are really special.”
