A group of sewing enthusiasts in town wanted to make bags to help reduce the use of plastic in town and around the same time, MidCoast Council was looking for a project to utilise the Better Waste Recycling funds from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Thanks to a joint project between Boomerang Bags Gloucester and MidCoast Council, the bags are in full production.
The idea is for the bags to made available to customers as an alternative to taking home plastic, with the bag to be returned or reused at the next shop.

Dungog has already rolled out the project and has estimated that a community the size of Gloucester requires 3000 bags.
They’re made from recycled materials like sheets and quilt covers that have been so far donated from the op shops in town.
The group is looking for anyone willing to help out, whether it be through sewing, cutting or generally lending a hand, by starting up your own sewing group or even using sewing at home. Boomerang Bags Gloucester will provide the materials and pattern.
There are donation drops available at Webb Bros and the Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Group for anyone who has a fair size of material they no longer need. To help out call Peta Tynan 0427 200 575.
