The dune fencing project is an extension on works already commenced by the Old Bar Beach Sand Replenishment Group, who have been building sand traps on the beach.
Dune fencing differs from sand traps in its orientation to the dune, with dune fencing running parallel to the dunes capturing sand that falls down the steep face of the dune and sand traps running perpendicular, capturing wind-blown sand.
The Old Bar Beach Sand Replenishment Group received funding for this project, which they developed with input and advice from key staff from MidCoast Council.
The Work for the Dole crew has already commenced this dune fencing work, so far completing from the Old Bar Surf Club emergency vehicle access ramp north towards Lani’s Caravan Park entrance. They will now work their way south to the end of Racecourse Creek.
Once this is complete, the crew will then assess how much material is remaining to work on the northern section of the beach towards Farquhar Inlet.
MidCoast Council’s manager of natural systems, Gerard Tuckerman, is pleased with the local partnerships between council, Nortec, Work for the Dole and the Old Bar Beach Sand Replenishment Group who have worked on this interim solution to the ongoing erosion problem at Old Bar Beach.
“While this is not a permanent solution, the work that has been done so far has been a fantastic and will help to increase a buffer against large swells that wash the sand away,” Gerard said.
While this work is underway, council has also enlisted the help of Nortec’s Work for the Dole crew to construct a 500 metre shared pathway in Old Bar, from the tennis court to the surf club, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The State Government, with Stephen Bromhead’s representation, has also made a generous $15,000 contribution towards this project.
“We’ve been liaising with the Old Bar community and Chamber of Commerce about this project for some time and we’re excited to have Nortec’s Work for the Dole crew involved to get this project off the ground. It’s a win-win for both Council and the local community,” said Phil Miles, MidCoast council’s manager of projects and engineering.
These projects form part of MidCoast Council’s commitment to delivering better facilities for our community. To find out more, visit www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au.
