It was a very well produced movie about the successful efforts of the locals near Lismore to repel the coal seam gas miners and the state government. A warning to big mining companies that large donations don't always get you what you want .
In Taree we appear to have a local version on a thankfully smaller scale.
I have some questions.
Why did the Department of Industry and Lands allow the reserve to become so overgrown over so many years that Mr Ed Rotgans felt compelled to do something about it? Did the Greater Taree council at any time contact the DIL about it ?
Does our local member Mr Bromhead think that the current actions of the DILs are acceptable? I don't.
Perhaps a sensible solution would be for the DIL to label the 'offending' plants, say by tying a black ribbon around them, so that they can be removed by hand without damaging the whole reserve as appears to be the case.
Perhaps the local council could arrange for the removal of the offending plants and send the DIL the bill for doing so?
Then again, what would you expect from a government that was prepared to override the wishes of the overwhelming majority of people near Lismore? Maybe we need to picket the reserve?
